Pickleball has exploded in popularity, transitioning from a niche backyard pastime to a competitive global sport. Whether you are coming from a tennis background or picking up a paddle for the first time, the learning curve is fast—but mastering the game takes strategy. If you find yourself stuck at a plateau, here are five ways to elevate your play.

1. Master the “Dink” In pickleball, power isn’t always the answer. The “dink” is a soft shot hit from the Kitchen line (non-volley zone) that drops just over the net into the opponent’s Kitchen. The goal is to force your opponent into a difficult, upward-moving shot. Mastering the patience required for a dink war is often what separates intermediate players from pros.

2. Focus on Footwork and Positioning Many beginners stand flat-footed. To improve, keep your weight on the balls of your feet and stay in a “ready position” with your paddle up. Perhaps most importantly, work on “following the ball” with your partner—moving in tandem like there is a rope tied between you.

3. The Third Shot Drop The third shot of a rally (the first shot by the serving team after the return) is the most critical. Instead of trying to drive the ball hard past your opponents who are already at the net, practice the “Third Shot Drop.” This is a soft lofting shot that lands in the Kitchen, allowing you and your partner to move forward and neutralize their advantage.

4. Target the Backhand It’s a fundamental truth in most racket sports: the backhand is usually weaker than the forehand. Pay attention to your opponents’ tendencies. If they struggle with low backhand volleys, keep feeding that side until they prove they can handle it.

5. Communication is Key Pickleball is a social game, but on the court, communication must be tactical. Calling “Mine!” or “Yours!” prevents collisions and “middle-muddle” where both players let a ball drop between them. Clear communication ensures you cover the court efficiently.
